Algernon Swinburne’s response to Robert Buchanan’s ‘Fleshly School of Poetry’ was a pamphlet entitled ‘Under The Microscope’, published in 1872. The original is pictured above. In 1899, the American publisher, Thomas B. Mosher, issued a reprint of Swinburne’s essay with an appendix including, among other items, Buchanan’s poetic response, ‘The Monkey and the Microscope’.
